The Color Run – Kansas City

The Color Run was so much fun!  If you ever have a chance to do this run, DO IT!

I went with 4 other friends from work: Victoria, Ericka, Jennifer & Tami.  We had such a good colorful time.

Our “Before” Picture! Jennifer, Ericka, Me, Victoria, Tami

We got to the Truman Sports Complex about 6:30 a.m. (for a Saturday, this is way too early, but adrenaline kept me going after my poor night’s sleep last night). It was surprising how many people were already there and we enjoyed seeing the crazy outfits and tutus people wore.

We were near the starting line a few minutes after we arrived. The race was to start at 7:30, but it was 7:45 before they counted us down to the start.  We were in the first wave and Jennifer, Ericka & Victoria started running leaving Tami & I in their dust (haha, I wasn’t ready to run right off the bat).  Here’s a map of our run:

Tami & I had a good walk and after a warm up, we finally ran.  I lasted a minute, but it was more than my 10 step minimum, so I can now say I have RUN in a 5K!!!  Maybe if the Color Run comes back to KC next year I will actually be able to run the whole thing.  The weather actually wasn’t too bad and I think we all appreciated the organizers moving the start time up by an hour to help everybody be done before it got terribly hot.  Most of the time there was a nice breeze, too.

The first color zone was yellow, then we passed through orange, blue and pink.  I was surprised how little color was actually on me when we reached the finish line. But then, we entered the festival area with a color toss every 15 minutes! They had a DJ and lots of fun music to dance to.   I definitely got most of my color in the festival area!

We walked back up to our car and got some other Color Runners to take our after picture.

We were a mess! But with some handy baby wipes (thank you twin mommy Ericka!) we were starting to get slightly clean before getting home.

I was actually surprised how well I cleaned up at home.  A little extra scrubbing power in the shower and I am mostly back to normal.  I followed the shower with a little nap and some lunch… I think I’m going to be relaxing a lot the rest of today!

Here are some more fun pictures for you to enjoy!

Victoria’s best side!

The Color Run is Coming!

Today was a great day!  I actually got up & went to the gym in the morning!  This has been a hard thing to do this summer.  But here in KC it’s a bazillion degrees and following my evening workout on Tuesday I decided I must run in the morning when I actually have energy.  I am repeating week 1 of C25K (run a minute, walk 90 seconds) and I was able to run in all the intervals (not necessarily one minute, but almost) except the 6th interval I just walked.  I’m pretty happy with that, especially compared to Tuesday – that was just really ugly!

Anyway, I’m not nearly as excited about my workout as I am THE COLOR RUN!!! It is this Saturday & Sunday – yes, KC had so many excited people, they added another one.  And I know I read somewhere this is a record setting Color Run – they have never had so many participants in a Color Run!  Wow!!! Way to go KC!!

Several of my friends from work & I are participating.  I went to pick up our race packets today & got sooooo excited!!  I was the dork taking pictures of everything.  Packet pick-up was at Arrowhead stadium in their club.  Lil man & hubby joined me and we climbed about 10 flights of stairs (or 6 according to fitbit, but with the heat it felt like twice as many!) to get to the pick-up area.

This was at the top of the stairs in the Arrowhead Club – Seriously it’s 105 degrees outside and they have a fire going??????

They were really well organized and efficient. We were in & out in 10 minutes!

It’s official! I have a running bib for my 1st 5K!!

Stay tuned for more exciting updates on my Color Run experience!

The Running Shoe Purchase Experience

As you know, I was nervous to get fitted for running shoes.  If you don’t know me, I live in the general Kansas City area, so I went to The Running Well Store, which for you locals, used to be the Sports Medicine store.  By the time we reached the front door, my palms were super sweaty and I was ready to run (pun intended) back to the car. I had a pre-conceived notion that although they said they were knowledgeable and helpful on the website, that I would be looked down upon or made to feel stupid with not having any running experience. I was so completely wrong – thank goodness!

As soon as we walked into the empty store, I met Linda.  She was super nice and when I started to tell her what I needed, it all came rushing out: the knee injury, the Color Run coming up, my weight loss, my nervousness. She was so supportive and really pumped me up about being able to complete the run. She asked if I had ever had a stride analysis, which of course I have not, hence the nervousness. And by this time a couple of other customers had come in, so I cannot tell you the relief I felt when she said I could “jog if I wanted to, but you don’t have to.” I chose the not having to option! I walked on the treadmill about a minute while they videotaped me.  More relief: the only part of me videotaped was my mid-calf down… whew.

Then she played back the tape and explained to me what she observed in my  stride. I overpronate, or my ankles roll inward, which means I need a good arch support (and was probably a good reason I injured my knee).  So then she measured my foot and got some boxes of running shoes.  I tried on several different brands: New Balance, Saucony, Brooks and Asics. They were all comfortable in their own way, but the Brooks really fit the best, although they felt a little tight across the top of my foot.  I got to wear them for awhile before deciding to take them home.  I even have two weeks to decide they’re not for me. I have never spent so much on a pair of shoes in my life! But I am sure it will be well worth it especially if I don’t want to re-injure myself.

So yesterday since I knew I was going to do a crazy amount of walking at work, I decided to wear the shoes for awhile to make sure they were really going to work. Well, it became pretty obvious after the first hour or so that I needed to adjust the laces.  They still felt really tight across the top of my foot.  But then I noticed if I adjusted them enough to be not so tight, that the part around my heel felt really loose… hmmm…. not such a pleasant feeling either way.  So I called the store and asked them to order me the wide width shoe.  It should be in in a week – which feels like forever when I’m finally feeling pumped up to start C25K again, but I’m okay with it.  When I get the new shoes I will start C25K and when the Color Run gets here June 30th, I will just do whatever training day I’m on and have a good time!! It may take me longer, but I will run a 5K!

I never did tell Linda about the blog, but if she ever reads this I want her to know that she made me so much more at ease and I truly appreciate her help and support!  If you need a new pair of running shoes, go to The Running Well Store and ask for Linda!

A First Time for Everything!

Tonight I participated in an event for the Dream Factory, which grants dreams to children with medical conditions.  The event was sponsored by my gym and I work with the organizer’s mom.  The organizer had cancer as a child and was granted a Dream.  You can watch more of his story and about the event here. Participants could either do a 5K run or a 2 mile walk.  I opted for the 2 mile walk and it was b-e-a-utiful weather tonight!!

My number! I've never had an athletic number!!

I realized on my way home that I had never participated in an organized athletic event. I don’t mean I had participated in events that were unorganized… I mean I have never played on a team, completed a race or anything athletic.  Wait – does Field Day count?  And this was such a good time.  I walked with one of my good friends, Andrea, & her mom as well as another friend of Andrea’s.  My hubby & the lil’ man were in the stands of the stadium to see the start & finish. The route started at our local high school football stadium, followed a couple of residential roads and looped back to the football stadium.  We chatted the whole time about toddlers, potty training, napping (and lack thereof), weekend plans, fishing boat motors, work, birthday parties and before we knew it, we were done!  Andrea & I crossed the finish line at 35:18!  I was surprised at the emotion I felt coming down the track toward the finish line and seeing my lil’ man’s face light up and cheer for us.  I know he might not remember it, but I will remember how I felt so proud to set a good example for him!  And of course when we were done, we all had to go get ice cream at our local walk-up ice cream stand.  Great ending to a wonderful day!

Andrea, Lil' Man and Me after the walk.

Week 11/52: Goals Check-in

Last week was not nearly as stressful as the prior week, just busy.  Even with Monday off work, I felt like I needed another day – isn’t that how it always is?  This week has been busy too and I can’t believe it’s already Thursday and I haven’t blogged about last week!  I can’t even think of any major events from last week.  I did increase my calorie goal and I very carefully monitored my intake since I was so frustrated with my plateau.

Here’s how I did with my goals this (really last) week:

  • Log my food & exercise. CHECK!  I increased my calories from 1250 to 1500, plus exercise.  This weekend I plan to post a lengthy explanation as to why – stay tuned!
  • Follow my Emeals Portion Controlled plan. CHECK! I made a couple of breakfast dishes that were so yummy!  One night we had baked French toast that was so easy I think I would opt to always make it baked.  I also made some blueberry oatmeal pancakes.  I don’t even like blueberries, but these were delish!
  • Eliminate my addiction to sugar. In progress!  I think last week went better than previous weeks, but I am still not perfect (and I won’t be and I don’t expect myself to be).
  • Exercise 5 days a week. CHECK! I made it to the gym 4 days, cleaned house another day and mowed the grass (in March!?!) on Saturday.
  • Get more sleep. Hahahaha – maybe I can focus on this this summer when I have a few weeks away from my job.  I started reading a new Jodi Picoult book and I cannot put it down – so good!!
  • Blog on my progress of my goals and post my weight. I posted a little.  Have you checked out my recipes?
  • Lose 52 Pounds in 52 Weeks. I weighed in on Tuesday and…. drumroll, please….. I lost a pound!!  Yippee!!  I have never been so excited to see one little pound gone!  I have busted my plateau with increased calories!!  I can’t wait to share my strategy with you soon! 23  pounds down, 29 to go. (And only 2 pounds to my next reward of new workout shoes, 3 pounds to the halfway point and 6 to one-derland!)

Now time for my friends to check in! How has your week been? Have you accomplished any goals?

Week 10/52: Goals Check-in

Woohoo!  Double-digit weeks!

Last week was stressful – and this one is too – hence I am nearly done with Week 11 and just now blogging on Week 10. At the end of Week 9, hubby & I decided to transition our son to a toddler bed.  You know, for fun… ha. ha. ha.  It’s going ok, but some nights it takes forevvvvvver to get him to sleep.  Anyway, that was stressor #1.

#2 is the defeating feeling of having lost zip for the second week in a row.  And if you had seen how much I worked in the yard Friday & Saturday you would be shocked too.  I have talked to friends about it and I know you mean well tossing out the “p” (plateau) word, but I have a hard time believing with so much more weight to lose I have hit a plateau.  Even though I hate the “p” word I have done some research and it seems very possible I have hit a plateau.  The good news is I don’t think I have to stay on this “p” long!  More on that in another post, because it gets kind of sciencey-mathy (Yes, that’s a real word).

Here’s how I did with my goals this (really last) week:

  • Log my food & exercise. CHECK!  Yes, even the Texas Roadhouse rolls I enjoyed on my “I lost 20 pounds” date with my husband.  I also logged the whopping 130 calories I burned going bowling on the same date.
  • Follow my Emeals Portion Controlled plan. CHECK! I made some pretty yummy stuff, but we also had a lot of leftovers from other meals.  Saturday (St. Patrick’s Day) we went to my Dad & his wife’s house for corned beef, cabbage, potatoes, peas, and the biggest cupcakes I’d ever seen.  It was all delicious.  I kept my portions small & estimated the calories as well as I could.
  • Eliminate my addiction to sugar. In progress! Ummm… did you see my comment about the cupcakes above?  I haven’t eliminated my sugar addiction yet.  I try everyday and do pretty well, but…… man, it’s hard!!
  • Exercise 5 days a week. CHECK! So. much. gardening. I think I exercised 3 days at the gym and then literally worked 6 hours in the garden on Friday and another 3 on Saturday. My legs were still sore yesterday from all the shoveling, digging, & squatting.
  • Get more sleep. Someday……
  • Blog on my progress of my goals and post my weight Not so great last week, just not enough hours in the day to get everything done!
  • Lose 52 Pounds in 52 Weeks. I didn’t lose a blessed thing this week, not even an ounce.  Ugh… sounds like the “p” word…  I was really ticked on Tuesday morning when I did my weigh-in.  I have a friend at work who has also been working out and joined Weight Watchers.  She & I started close to the same weight and she has now lost 10 pounds more than I.  I am very happy for her and she looks great, but I so want to be there too!  I am frustrated!!! 22  pounds down, 30 to go.

Now time for my friends to check in! How has your week been? Have you accomplished any goals?

Week 9/52: Goals Check-in

It was bound to happen.  Like my toddler I have been pushing the limits – how much can I eat with how little exercise?  This week I have found my limits.  This is the first week I not only didn’t lose, I GAINED a pound.  I have no excuses – I haven’t been weight lifting, so it’s not muscle over fat; I only exercised three days; I indulged in sweets; I even ate pizza twice last week and probably the worst – I drank real Coke. Not diet, not Coke Zero… Coca-Cola.

Here’s the blow-by-blow:

  • Log my food & exercise. CHECK!  Yes, even though I ate pizza (two nights), drank a Coca-Cola, ate ice cream (which even broke my Lenten resolution) I logged it all.  The interesting thing is I only went over my calorie limit Friday & Sunday and came in under my weekly calorie goal.  Hmmmm……
  • Follow my Emeals Portion Controlled plan. CHECK! I cooked only two or three nights last week as I had several work commitments in the evenings. Monday I had BBQ with my dad, his wife, my aunt & uncle which was so good – both the BBQ & the company!  Wednesday was sandwiches provided by work, Friday was pizza provided by work and then Saturday our family ordered pizza. Lots of meals out…  may have been part of my weight gain; although I thought I accurately tracked the restaurant meals. Also, if you haven’t check out my new series “What I Made Monday” on this blog to get some yummy healthy recipe ideas.
  • Eliminate my addiction to sugar. In progress! As I said last week, “I am not perfect!” Oh so true, I unfortunately had ice cream probably 3 times last week and then there was the Coca-Cola.  I still tracked it all, but the addiction is still definitely there!  Maybe I am just not mentally ready to make this change since I am making so many other changes and taking on new challenges.  I will do my best as Lent continues though!
  • Exercise 5 days a week. NOPE! I exercised only 3 days at the gym this week.  Saturday I did spend about 2 1/2 hours outside working in the flower beds.  I pulled weeds, dug holes, moved plants, pushed a wheelbarrow.  My Fitness Pal said I burned nearly 800 calories!  Buuuuutttt… with the weight gain I wonder if that was accurate??
  • Participate in a 5K I am about to register for a 2 mile walk to benefit the Dream Factory.  More info later!
  • Get more sleep. This totally should have been my Lenten resolution.  I have been regularly falling asleep on the couch about 9, but then I get up around 2 to go to bed and toss & turn.  In the morning I feel more tired than the day before… I’ve got to get more sleep!!!
  • Blog on my progress of my goals and post my weight CHECK!  As in check out my posts!  I would love to have more followers & thus more accountability!!  Feel free to click that little button to the left to sign up to get an e-mail whenever I make a new post – and you might even get some new recipes out of it!
  • Lose 52 Pounds in 52 Weeks. So bummed about my one pound gain – I am sooooo close to hitting the 100s!  Now I feel like it’s so far away.   I have a theory that I may be fearful of letting go of this weight.  It is easier to follow old habits.  It’s comfortable, the food tastes better, I can sleep longer if I don’t work out.  But what could I possibly be afraid of? How about having to buy new clothes? It’s expensive. Or people noticing me? I really don’t enjoy being the center of attention (although I do love the compliments I’ve been getting). Maybe I’m really worried that I’ll reach my goal weight and still not be satisfied with my body.  But I do want to be healthy.  I want to be fit.  I want to be able to run around in the yard and keep up with my 2-year-old. I get tired of people saying it’s not about the number on the scale.  And you know, I’d be okay with that if I had lost nearly all my weight, but I should not be stalling out now with as much as I have to lose.  My clothes are fitting better (the pants I wore today I could have sworn were going to fall off). I even have a pair of jeans that I bought over Christmas (that I had to zip while jumping up and down to get the zipper to budge and then I could hardly breathe if I sat down) that are now loose in the waist and getting there in the hips.  I know things are headed in the right direction, I’m just ready for things to move faster!!   22  pounds down, 30 to go.

Now time for my friends to check in! How has your week been? Have you accomplished any goals?

Week 8/52: Goals Check-in

Thanks for all the good thoughts & prayers – it appears they have worked!  We’ve had zero plumbing issues for the last 10 days.  We really put our drain to the test this weekend with numerous loads of laundry, running the dishwasher and plenty of showers and baths.  We spent a lot of time over the weekend re-organizing what had been in the basement and moving it back to our under-the-stairs closet.  It felt wonderful to have several bags of trash and donations to get out of our house.  The garage will be ready for my car as soon as we convert the lil’ man’s crib to a toddler bed (the crib is convertible and the extra pieces are in the garage) and once we move just a couple more things into the closet.  aaaahhhh……… feeeeeels gooooooood!

Here’s how this week went:

  • Log my food & exercise. CHECK! (Yes, even the three pieces of cheese pizza from Friday night. And the two donuts from Saturday morning.) It’s okay if I’m not always under or even with my calorie goal as long as I am honest with myself!  It’s a great reality check to see the numbers there in black & white.  I may not like what I see, but it keeps me in line.  I would love to add some more friends on My Fitness Pal.  If you use it, please add me (dizzymomma)!
  • Follow my Emeals Portion Controlled plan. CHECK! I cooked several nights last week in a frenzy to make up for the last several hit or miss weeks.  I think our family’s favorite meal was the lasagna on Saturday night; although I think it could have been “skinnier.”  It wasn’t until the lasagna was in the oven that I entered the recipe in My Fitness Pal to get the total calories and it was way more than I would have liked or expected.  So I changed the servings from 6 to 8 to help a bit. The recipe already called for reduced fat versions of cheeses, I used turkey meat instead of ground beef as well, but the next time I make it I will see if there might be any other substitutions I could make.  Our family also ate salad while the lasagna cooled a bit so even after having a smaller portion than called for I felt satisfied.
  • Eliminate my addiction to sugar. In progress! This has been much more difficult than I thought!!  I don’t know if it’s the stress I’ve been under at work (wait, that’s all the time, nothing unusual) or if sweets just seem that much more intriguing since I’m not eating them (yes, that’s DEFINITELY it!) but I have had a hard time not sneaking just one lil something sweet everyday.  Now if I’m around people I am usually ok.  They say, “Want some candy little girl?” and I say, “NOOOO!” and run in the other direction.  But if I am alone and hungry… well then the showdown between the M&Ms and I usually ends in a chocolaty mess.  So surprise, surprise, I am not perfect!
  • Exercise 5 days a week. NOPE! I exercised only 3 days at the gym this week.  I don’t remember exactly why I didn’t make it, but one morning I was having one of those weird dream-like thought sequences in which you are between half-awake and half-asleep and somehow convinced myself I did not have to get up until (what turned out to be) much too late to make it to the gym.  At the time it made perfect sense and then once I was fully awake, I thought, “What the hell? Why would I get up nearly an hour late?”
  • Participate in a 5K I AM REGISTERED FOR THE JUNE 30TH COLOR RUN!!!!!!!!  A team of my fellow co-workers will be participating and raising money for the Ronald McDonald House.  I will post more details as the event gets closer. I am so excited!!!! (I did skip a workout so I could register and it will be well worth it)!
  • Get more sleep. I’m beginning to think there is a lot of truth to the expression, ‘”You can sleep when you’re dead.” Every weekend I resolve to get to bed earlier, but there is always so much to do!  Am I right, mamas??
  • Blog on my progress of my goals and post my weight I will be posting new pics, measurements and weight here in a little bit.  I am also going to start a new series of posts on my blog called, “What I Made Monday.”  I’ll post the Emeals dinner recipe, pictures and the family comments.
  • Lose 52 Pounds in 52 Weeks. Despite missing a couple of workouts, I lost again this week!  I am highly motivated to have an awesome week this week.  As it stands now I have lost 23 pounds, which means I have 29 pounds to go.  If I can lose 3 more pounds this coming week, I will be exactly at my halfway point, plus weigh the least I have in probably 5 or more years and be just a couple of pounds away from ONE-derland!!! 23  pounds down, 29 to go!!!
What an amazing two months this has been!  I am so proud of the work I have done and so appreciative of all of my friends’ and family’s support in my endeavor to get healthy.  Thank you for checking in on me, for noticing my hard work and keeping me strong!!!  I can’t wait to see what changes the next couple of months bring!

Now time for my friends to check in! How has your week been? Have you accomplished any goals?

Color me Excited!

I signed up for the Color Run today! It’s coming to Kansas City June 30th. I’m so excited!! Not only is it going to be a huge race for runners, walkers, old & young, but it’s a huge party at the end.  I’ve seen pictures from other sites around the country and it just look likes the most fun a race can be.

Not only will my teammates & I have a good time, but we’ll also be raising money for the Ronald McDonald House at the same time.

Week 7/52: Goals Check-in

Knock on wood, send up some prayers – it appears that our plumbing issues are over.  This past week we continued our quest to find the reason our washer draining would result in basement flooding.  Our plumber heard from us again early in the week and once again dragged his equipment over to snake the drains.  This time he managed to snake all the way out to where our main drain meets up with the city sewer lines and hit some big ol’ chunk o’something at the junction.  Since then knock, knock no issues.  We are now slowly catching up on laundry and maybe someday we will get all boxes back in the basement and my car can go back in the garage!

All things considered, this past week seemed to go pretty well. Let’s see how this week went:

  • Log my food & exercise. CHECK! The good, the bad and the ugly – I really made sure I logged whatever I ate.  Even that Sonic bacon cheeseburger and tater tots on Fat Tuesday…  that was the only splurge though, so I am okay with that! Remember – if you use My Fitness Pal, please add me (dizzymomma) as a friend so we can keep each other accountable!
  • Follow my Emeals Portion Controlled plan. CHECK! I think I cooked a couple of nights.  Wednesday I made this tilapia dish with tomatoes and artichoke hearts.  The hubby thought it was great, but I felt it was lacking something and it still tasted a LOT like fish… and I still have some leftovers.  I am tired of eating it!  Thursday night I made a really yummy homemade pizza – BBQ chicken pizza.  I was a little wary because I’ve never really thought bbq sauce belonged on pizza, but this was actually really good and super easy!  We had enough rotisserie chicken left from the bbq pizza, that I made a chicken alfredo pizza on Saturday night.  I was quite impressed with it (if I say so myself!) and again, it was really easy.  Start with one whole wheat pizza crust (I used Mama Mia’s from our local Wal-Mart), then top with 3 Tbls. Bertolli Garlic Alfredo sauce.  Layer on sliced red onion, 1 1/2 C. diced rotisserie chicken and a couple of large handfuls fresh spinach.  Dot with 3 more Tbls. alfredo sauce. Then top with 2 C. (1 bag) Kraft Italian blend cheese.  Bake following crust directions. I may have let our pizza go a minute or two longer than it should, but aside from the very edge, it was tasty! I should have taken pictures of all the steps, but I never think of the picture process thing that so many of you wonderful bloggers think of, so below is a picture of the half-eaten result!
  • Eliminate my addiction to sugar. In progress!  I have not had sweets since last Tuesday.  I did have Coke Zero with lunch on Saturday, but none of the obvious things I am eliminating.
  • Exercise 5 days a week. CHECK! I exercised in the afternoon a couple of days, which felt really unusual since the sun was shining, but it was also a little energizing to see some light as I walked! My knee still bothers me when I do the elliptical, so I’m wondering what is going on?  It feels uncomfortable under the knee cap.  And one day last week I went to put my right knee on the couch to peer out our window and I couldn’t do it!  It was so uncomfortable I had to hop up right away.  It’s really not that painful, just uncomfortable. It no longer looks swollen either…hmmm…. thoughts from you guys?
  • Participate in a 5K So now the Color Run has moved the KC date to June 30th… and registration opens this Tuesday at 6 a.m.!  I cannot wait to register!!  Just hope my knee will cooperate so that I can train and at least run part of it.
  • Get more sleep. Well…. I have been getting more sleep, but it’s been on the couch!  I have been zonking out on the couch this week and not waking up until 3:30, 4:00 a.m. then crawling in my own bed where I can’t fall asleep for what feels like forever.  At least I’m sleeping earlier.
  • Blog on my progress of my goals and post my weight New weight is posted on my stats page!
  • Lose 52 Pounds in 52 Weeks. WOW!  Again, I cannot believe how well this is going and I’m nervous that I will sabotage my efforts just because I am scared of all the changes I’m going through.  I absolutely loved that when I walked into work on Wednesday people instantly noticed that I am slimming down.  I heard, “you’re lookin’ good!” and “hey, skinny!” I was so flattered and I actually accepted the compliments instead of blowing them off (which is really difficult for me). Since I have already lost over 20 pounds, my new goal is to have lost 30 pounds by my birthday, which is in April!  My hubby & I also need to find time for a date since that’s my next reward I have earned (I’m kind of behind on indulging in those!). Next up – a new pair of workout shoes! 21.4  pounds down, 28.6 to go!!!

Now time for my friends to check in! How has your week been? Have you accomplished any goals?
